Why does exercise help ADHD

Why does exercise help ADHD

If you have followed or come across any of my social posts you will know that for me exercise greatly helps me with focus and productivity, but i thought i would dive deeper into why it actually is one of the most effective tools (outside prescription medication) to help with those ADHD behaviours (both in adults and kids

Here's some science behind why exercise is a game-changer for helping to control ADHD behaviours:

  1. Dopamine & Norepinephrine Boost: Our ADHD brains often have lower levels of key neurotransmitters like dopamine and norepinephrine, which are crucial for focus, motivation, and impulse control. Exercise acts as a natural booster for these chemicals! It helps regulate their levels, essentially giving your brain a more consistent supply, which can lead to better attention and reduced impulsivity.

  2. Channeling Restlessness: That restless energy many of us feel? Exercise provides a healthy, productive outlet for it. Instead of fidgeting or feeling constantly "on edge," a good workout or even a brisk walk can help burn off that excess energy, leaving you feeling calmer and more settled. (this is especially true for our teenage son!)

  3. Improved Executive Function: Physical activity, especially aerobic exercise, increases blood flow to the prefrontal cortex – the brain's control center for executive functions like planning, organizing, and problem-solving. This can lead to better decision-making and reduced impulsivity throughout your day.

  4. Stress & Anxiety Reduction: ADHD often comes with co-occurring anxiety and stress. Exercise is a fantastic natural stress reliever. By reducing stress hormones and boosting feel-good endorphins, it can create a calmer mental state, making ADHD behaviours less overwhelming.

  5. Better Sleep: Regular exercise can significantly improve sleep quality. Better sleep, in turn, can profoundly impact ADHD symptoms, leading to improved focus, mood, and impulse control the next day.
